Deschutes River trips

Designated "Wild and Scenic," the Deschutes River begins its journey in the mountains of the high Cascades. Wildlife—including deer, coyote, waterfowl, upland birds, osprey, river otter, and mink—punctuate the natural beauty of colorful wildflowers and pungent sagebrush on the steep cliffs and mountains. This is world-class fly fishing in some of Oregon's most spectacular and natural habitat.

The fishing

Our multi-day fishing trips join the river in central Oregon outside Madras where the Deschutes winds through the beautiful desert canyon.

An outstanding native trout fishery, the Deschutes is famous for the brilliant trout known as “redsides.” Some of the best fishing begins in May with the fabulous salmon fly hatch and continues through July when the caddis and mayfly predominate. Fish average between 13 and 16 inches, although larger fish are common. Regardless of size, these are some of the strongest fresh-water fish you will ever catch. It is not unusual to find yourself into the backing on the first run.

As summer gives way to fall, the steelhead begin their migration up the Deschutes. These ocean-going fish require patience when fishing but provide some of the best river acrobatics once hooked. Landing one of these 5–10 pounders is a dream come true.

Although all trips travel the river in comfortable McKenzie drift boats, fishing is done only while wading in the river. This is demanding fishing for large, wild trout where delicate, precision casting finds the most fish.

We recommend this trip with the understanding that the wading can be difficult and the casting challenging. Wading gear, including good felt-soled boots is a must. Our guides have years of experience fishing the Deschutes, and provide quality casting instruction. All are state licensed, insured, and hold First Aid and CPR certification.

Camping and meals

While the fishing can be challenging, the camping is not. Meals include homemade baked goods, salads for lunch and dinner, and top quality meat. This is traditional American cuisine served fresh on the river. A drink table with ice and hors d’oeuvres greets you at the end of each day. And there is no need to wait until after the trip for your shower—we provide hot showers every morning and evening. Comfortable cots with Therm-a-Rest® sleeping pads are provided with 1 or 2 people sleeping in spacious 4– or 6–person tents.

Deschutes trips cover about 40 miles of river. The most popular trip, especially during trout season, is for 3 days and 2 nights. Another option is a 4-day, 3-night trip to allow for a more leisurely pace or a one-day layover. Whatever your choice, we promise a trip filled with life-long memories of spectacular fishing, helpful hints and instruction, incredible scenery, fabulous food, and new friendships.
